Patricia Findlay asked: When buying gifts for a child, give some thought to what would bring long-term benefit to him or her and consequently to the rest of the family. A well-chosen Christmas or birthday present will not only give initial delight, but can amuse that child for months or years to come and at the same time, help them learn skills that will stand them in good stead as they mature.
Because children can be extremely compliant at times and quite inflexible at others, it is necessary to adopt different techniques to hold their interest. From a very young age, children can differentiate between what they find interesting and what bores them and often what they find appealing at one moment will have completely lost its attraction at another. Educational games can prove to be a success under such circumstances.
It is a well known fact that games and toys help the overall development of a child. Toddlers are given games that teach basic concepts like sequencing, counting, arranging, and coordinating, which help them develop hand-eye coordination and develop memory. Shapes, colours, alphabet and numbers can also easily be taught through games.
Older children learn numeracy, literacy and social studies in graded lessons as they get older. Maths concepts, starting with whole numbers, then fractions, money etc, though to algebra, geometry & trigonometry can be incorporated into games to suit the various learning levels.
In the same way, language development starts with reading and writing, expanding vocabulary, then comprehension of what is read, responding to meaning in text by relating to prior experience all the way up writing essays and assignments. More learning material is presented online nowadays and less in text books so it is just as essential as ever that children can read fluently. The medium has changed, that’s all.
Kids will happily play learning games if there is enough variety and challenge to keep them interested. Electronic games fill a niche here because it is so easy to include appealing graphics and interesting sounds into a game, but also have different levels of difficulty.
Many producers even boast that they will never present exactly the same game to a child twice and they can safely say this because of the numerous combinations of variables. When done well, the challenge presented keeps kids from becoming bored and they will play for hours developing skills such as coordination, decision-making, creative thinking and responsibility for choices among many others.
There are two ways you can live life. You can have a victim mentality and blame others for your problems or you can take action in any situation you are faced with and do something to make it better.
A good toy or game will help a child to think about any situation presented and think what action they could take, rather than just blindly accept whatever comes up. This skill alone, once it becomes a habit, will go a long way towards helping them become successful in later life. Isn’t this a very good reason to give educational toys as gifts?
